time is a problem

Hi all. Ive been working on another SS Monte and i sand blasted the whole car which took me about 2 weeks to do. Now im doing some minor repairs to panels when i can.Its been about 2 weeks and i got 6 panels done so far. Each time i finish a panel ide take a rattle can of duplacolor filler primer and cover the panel to prevent any more rust from forming. When i am finished with all the panels i am going to put on my two coats of epoxy primer on the car. Then wet sand and place my basecoat/clearcoat on the car. My question is do i remove the duplacolor primer all the way before i epoxy prime? or can i leave it there? And my next question is i may have to wait to paint the car after i epoxy prime it about 2 to 3 weeks. Do i have to do anything else because of waiting between epoxy and painting the base?

throw the duplicolor away. it will do nothing to protect it. blast then epoxy then do your fill work. if you go past the 7 day window you need to scuff and reseal with epoxy.

How about blast one panel, or as many as you can in the time you have, then spray epoxy primer directly over that. There's no law that says you have to epoxy the entire job at once, on the contrary, epoxy can be recoated with itself easily, and lends itself well to processes done in stages.

Rattlecan primer is an extreme waste of time and money, especially because it is unlikely you will get it all off again.

time is a problem

Ok then. I should stop with the rattle can and just spray the epoxy primer and then do the body work (little dings and dents from a dog). Then spray the panels ive got done. Then if its past the 7 days when im ready to paint the car i should just scuff up the epoxy with a scuff pad(red or grey) then apply another coat and then wait a day then basecoat/clearcoat.

Well, once the bodywork is done on all the panels and they are primed, it's likely you will need to block sand and reprime at least once more, unless you are a real whiz at bodywork and finished it super straight and smooth.

yes of coarse i would block the car but in between waiting after all of this is done and i may have to wait maybe 2 weeks that is where i would scuff with the pad and put another coat of primer then wait a day and then paint. does that sound right because i have the problem with time. im handicapped and my own body causes these waiting times where i maybe down for a week or two at a time.

Make sure to get every speck of that Duplicolor off, and stop using it. I work when I have time, like you. Here is what I do a lot.

Blast and spray 1 wet coat of epoxy right after blasting (see Bob H.s post on proper bare metal prep first)

When you are ready for filler work 2 weeks later or whenever, scuff with a red pad and spray 1 more wet coat of epoxy.

Now you're ready for filler and you have superior corrosion protection.

ok ill do one coat of epoxy over whole car i can do that. then when feeling up to it again ill shoot another coat on a couple panels then do the body work the next day then do i spray another coat after the body work is done and then if i have to wait do i do another the night before i paint the car with basecoat?

I spray one good coat of epoxy after filler and then block a couple days later to see what I missed. I use Dolphin Glaze where I need it and spot in those areas with epoxy before 2k.

this site is so great and the people respond so quickly and using all this new product is not like it was 20-25years ago. i am so greatful . ive gotten more done in the time i have in it just by looking at all the questions and ansers that are on this one site.

Are you saying that if a guy lays down a coat of epoxy to seal the bare metal and then waits longer that the 7 day window he has to scuff and recoat with epoxy before laying down filler? I thought if you went past 7 days the primer had to be scuffed and then a guy could start laying down filler (no recoat needed).

Also, I was doing some patch panel work on my 69 firebird this winter and since it was too cold to spray epoxy on the small bare metal welded areas I just hit them with some Duplicolor primer-sealer to keep flash rust away. Then when it warmed up and I could spray epoxy, I removed most of the spray paint with lacquer thinner and 80 grit. But I'm far from an expert!

past 7 days you need to anchor pattern for anything else. filler or primer.
once again the lac junk primer is like a sponge.
