time is a problem

There are many different types of Dimension topcoats, and many are of poor quality. I have not mentioned much about their topcoats here, but I will say there are only a handful of them which are suitable for use on anything decent. The trick is to know which ones, and it's doubtful the average paint store employee knows anything about it.

What they have tried to do with Dimension is create a product for every budget, so that there are about half a dozen core resin technologies in play, and their tints need a lot of whatever resin is to be used in order to work. In a way, it is a really smart and fascinating way to get many different qualities of paint out of one line of tints. In another way, it is a horrible idea, because their 1K alkyd enamel is called "Dimension," and their acrylic urethane and high solids basecoat are also called "Dimension," even though they perform nothing alike. I wouldn't paint a garbage can with their 1K enamel, but I have vehicles out there, cleared with their top-line urethane, that look just as good 5 years later as the day they were sprayed.

But right now, I am only speaking of ONE product here, an epoxy primer that I have actually used and tested alongside SPI epoxy for comparison.

DP800 epoxy primer will not cause a failure, but it's not as good as SPI epoxy primer.

Bash away.

thank god you came online because i dont know what i would do if i had to remove this primer from the car. and i thank everyone that has talked about different things. so now today im going to fix my little dings and dents and after im going to throw another coat of the dp800 on it. if i only had a spi dealer close from what everyones telling me

Actually you have an SPI dealer close by. Call (706) 781-2220 and your SPI delivery guy shows up in about 48 hours -- he's dressed in brown.

where is he out of ? i am not sure of that 706 area code

Barry, SPI will ship their product to you with no shipping charge. Call that number and see.

I would switch to SPI epoxy primer if I were you, but I wanted you to know that there is no need to remove what has already been done with the DP800, in spite of ignorant comments to the contrary.

the is nothing ignorant about my comments.

you like SW good for you use it...

talk about it all you want.

i have used Omni epoxy on a several things in the past as a base over bare metal and never had a problem.

is any of it as quality as SPI imo no,no matter the Brand and line of the Brand.

we all have opinions and we all like what we like, but in my years the odds are way against anything SW no matter the line.

just sayin Travis...

Well I have been SW for about 5 years & I agree the dimension is trash, but on the other hand the ultra 7000 is top notch in my opinion. I have always had perfect color match & it sprays & covers as good as or better than ppg I used to use. The ultra 7000 has come along way in the last few years. Have no problems what so ever. Been using spi about 2 years, I don`t use any sw primers or clears, just the ultra 7000 with it`s stabilizer.

By ignorant, I mean the strict definition "lacking knowledge." Some people use the word as an insult, I do not. I use it only to describe a mental state of either knowing something, or not knowing something. I consider myself more of an authority on the particular product in question, since I have used and tested it. In my opinion, that carries far more weight than mere opinion based on a name.

I would like to add, that a knowledgeable person that is very respected on this board has admitted to me me that S-W primers and clears are mostly very good. Insanely priced, but good.

Also, Hotbo, I was not referring directly to anyone, but please accept my apology if you feel insulted by what I have written. I'm trying hard to stick to the facts, though that can upset people who deal in beliefs that masquerade as facts.

crash no apologize needed i was the 1 being kinda of a ass on the subject!!!

no i am in no way educated on SW!other than the few things i have used and heard?

i have heard the ultra 7grand is a good base, but have to go by what the shop in town does with it,but then again they suck!!

hey we all like different bases and that good.i was taught many years ago that SW was a horrible product and in fact it was years ago,but things change!

so if i came off Brash im sorry and no Hard feelings intended!!!

Travis....

wow i didnt mean to upset anyone in a figure of speech. specially as a brand new person of this site. i am taking all of this in and you all have been wonderful and i love all the opinions. i can say that i have gotten more info from you all than any other site i have been at for the longest time. but now i have to get some more info on the new paints and technique and i hope that i dont ruffle any one else. but for sure i will try the spi supplys and i will be back to talk with you all and i will give it to you straight. i have to wait for my catalog since there is no rep near me but once i get it i will probly go for one of the clear coats based on what paint i choose.

here in nor-cal my local ppg jobber prices are too high for reducer (80. for omni), so i order epoxy, clear and reducer all the way from ga! weird, i am employed by two co.'s from ga as well...

SPI's reducer is really, really good, especially since the recent reformulation. I doubt there is any better, at any price.

I mean the regular stuff, btw, I have not used the low VOC stuff!

time is a problem

you guys have been so helpful that maybe you guys may know how to clean up that butyl sealent sticky stuff from the opra window openings of a car?? sorry to be off subject but i dont want this stuff dripping down onto my freshly primed monte carlo

thanks
barry

no not i. im on body work. its all small stuff. what it was is the people that had the car thanks barryhad it in there back yard and there dogs (hunting type) were climbing all over it and it has dings and little dents.i have put on a new hood and reamoved all the glass except for the opra windows and as i was doing some body work i noticed that the opera windows are scratched so now i have to figure out how to get rid of that butyl crap on the car. but no im not switching any primer.

ok. putting spi epoxy over it would be a waste of time. solvent w&g remover will clean up the mess.
